We rescue and rehabilitate sick and injured marine mammals at our state-of-the-art veterinary facilities by engaging a dedicated workforce and a supportive community.  We learn from the patients in our care and contribute to scientific understanding of the changing health of our ocean, taking action to address ocean threats and save endangered species.  We lead as a teaching hospital by training veterinary professionals locally and internationally, and inspiring future ocean stewards through innovative school and public education programs.

 

About the Organization

The Marine Mammal Center is the largest facility of its kind in the world. Founded in 1975, The Center has grown into an internationally renowned and state-of-the art marine mammal hospital, research center and educational organization. Each year, The Center treats 600 – 800 sick, injured and orphaned marine mammals, with the goal of rehabilitation and release. Its professional staff collaborates with over 30 different scientific, educational, federal, state and non-profit organizations from around the world. 

 

Marine mammal scientists and veterinarians from across the globe visit The Center and shadow its staff and volunteers to learn from the hundreds of animals treated each year, and from its acclaimed veterinary, scientific, and research staff. By collaborating with leading scientists and researchers to learn from the patients in their care, The Center expands and advances science to increase understanding of the health of the ocean and highlights implications for human health.

 

In addition to its work within the scientific community, The Center’s formal and informal education programs reach 100,000 children and adults ever year. Ultimately, The Center’s work inspires action and fosters stewardship toward the care of our environment.

 

Overlooking the ocean in the Marin Headlands, in Sausalito, CA, The Center operates three field stations in its 600-mile rescue range on the California coastline from San Luis Obispo through Mendocino County. Simultaneous to the construction of its new Kona, Hawaii facility, The Center’s rescue range has increased to include the entire Hawaiian archipelago. With an annual operating budget of almost $9M, 60 to 70 staff depending on the time of year, and 1,200 actively engaged volunteers, The Center operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

 

Opportunity:

This is an opportunity to play a key leadership role in a highly successful organization working at the intersection of animal care, scientific discovery and environmental stewardship.  The successful candidate will report to the Executive Director and will join a collegial team of professionals who are some of the best in the world at what they do. 

 

The Director of Life Support Systems and Facilities provides oversight, planning and management of all construction, operations, and preventative maintenance for The Center’s hospital facilities near Sausalito, Monterey, and San Luis Obispo, California, and in Kona, Hawaii.  These facilities comprise more than 150,000 square feet of buildings, mechanical systems, exhibits, roads and grounds developed to be environmentally responsible and to use resources efficiently.  They include animal care pens and pools, and critical aquatic animal life support systems. The position manages four specialized technicians and one custodian, as well as volunteers and seasonal interns.

 

Principle Duties:

Strategy and Planning:  Engage members of the senior management team to create long-term facility plans supporting The Center’s strategic initiatives.  Develop and implement annual department budgets and capital plans.  Analyze and report on key metrics, identifying potential areas of improvement.  Present regularly at Board and Finance Committee meetings.

  • Applied Engineering Expertise: Employ engineering best practices and identify opportunities to streamline new construction and fabrication projects, building automation and control systems, life safety and aquatic animal life support systems.
  • Staff Management: Manage staff in daily operations, prioritization and scheduling of routine and unplanned maintenance. Direct and coordinate staff in completing capital projects, including the coordination of outside contractors.  Motivate staff and ensure the department has optimal skill levels through training and professional development.
  • Project Management: Manage construction and improvement projects from design and construction into post-construction operations, outlining and monitoring scope, timelines and spending. Collaborate closely with project stakeholders to ensure that work meets The Center’s needs.  Conduct RFQ and bid proposals, procure equipment and schedule work.
  • Safety: Acts as The Center’s Safety Coordinator and is responsible for the overall management, administration and oversight of the TMMC safety program. Maintains facility in compliance with all city, state and federal enforcement agencies associated with facility operations, hazardous materials handling and life safety systems.

  • Must be able to travel and manage projects in locations along the California coast and Hawaii.

  • Ability to perform the physical work requiring manual dexterity, agility, strength and coordination, including ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to safely wear Personal Protective Equipment when working around hazardous chemicals.

 

Professional Experience / Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, engineering management, engineering technology, construction management, or equivalent experience.
  • Aquarium or zoo experience strongly preferred. Aquatic animal life support systems, water filtration or wastewater treatment systems preferred.
  • Building systems management experience, including controls & automation for HVAC and Life Support System preferred.
  • Experience deciphering technical documentation and instructions, cut-sheets, diagrams and floor plans preferred.
  • 8 – 10 years’ experience in a management and cross-functional role preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in a team-managed work environment; ability to negotiate, lead across divisions and motivate team members.
