We rescue and rehabilitate sick and injured marine mammals at our state-of-the-art veterinary facilities by engaging a dedicated workforce and a supportive community.  We learn from the patients in our care and contribute to scientific understanding of the changing health of our ocean, taking action to address ocean threats and save endangered species.  We lead as a teaching hospital by training veterinary professionals locally and internationally, and inspiring future ocean stewards through innovative school and public education programs. 

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Marine Mammal Center is the largest facility of its kind in the world. Founded in 1975, The Center has grown into an internationally renowned and state-of-the art marine mammal hospital, research center and educational organization. Each year, the Center treats 600 – 800 sick, injured and orphaned marine mammals, with the goal of rehabilitation and release. Its professional staff collaborates with over 30 different scientific, educational, federal, state and non-profit organizations from around the world.

Marine mammal scientists and veterinarians from across the globe visit the Center and shadow its staff and volunteers to learn from the hundreds of animals treated each year, and from its acclaimed veterinary, scientific, and research staff. By collaborating with leading scientists and researchers to learn from the patients in their care, the Center expands and advances science to increase understanding of the health of the ocean and highlights implications for human health.

 In addition to its work within the scientific community, the Center’s formal and informal education programs reach 100,000 children and adults ever year. Ultimately, the Center’s work inspires action and fosters stewardship toward the care of our environment.

 

Overlooking the ocean in the Marin Headlands, in Sausalito, CA, the Center operates three field stations in its 600-mile rescue range on the California coastline from San Luis Obispo through Mendocino County. Simultaneous to the construction of its new Kona, Hawaii facility, the Center’s rescue range has increased to include the entire Hawaiian archipelago. With an annual operating budget of almost $10M, 60 to 70 staff depending on the time of year, and 1,200 actively engaged volunteers, The Center operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

 

  

ROLE DESCRIPTION

 

The Volunteer Engagement Team is part of The Marine Mammal Center’s People and Culture Department. The Volunteer Engagement Team oversees the recruitment, onboarding, retention and engagement of the Center’s large and geographically diverse volunteer force of over 1,200 volunteers. The two Volunteer Engagement  Coordinators provide general administrative and coordination support to the entire volunteer workforce as well as to the employees who directly manage volunteers. The entire team is responsible for overseeing all policies, procedures and processes as they affect volunteers as well as coordinating organization-wide volunteer retention and recognition initiatives.

 

Under the direction of the Volunteer Engagement Manager, this role will be directly responsible for overseeing the recruitment and onboarding of all new volunteers at our main Sausalito site as well as our other facilities in California and Hawai‘i. The person in this role will need to develop a deep knowledge of the Center, its volunteer roles, and its policies/procedures. This role will directly oversee the volunteers who are responsible for presenting at onboarding trainings as well as those who are responsible for interviewing potential volunteers. The person in this role must constantly seek to improve their knowledge of best practices in volunteer onboarding and will oversee, evaluate, and improve the onboarding processes regularly.

 

In addition to overseeing all onboarding processes, this role supports a variety of other volunteer initiatives including but not limited to managing Coastal Clean-Up Day, Volunteer Appreciation Week and Volunteer Appreciation Party.

 

This is a full time, nonexempt role that requires a flexible schedule. The regular work week will be

Tuesday through Saturday with occasional work in evenings and Sundays/Mondays, as needed. The role is also occasionally required to travel to our other locations.

 

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

Under direction of the Volunteer Engagement Manager, provide the following support:

  • Responsible for all recruitment activities associated with filling volunteer roles under the general principle of right person, right role, right time
  • Serve as the primary contact for community members interested in volunteering at the Center
  • Coordinate with all employees and Crew Supervisors who oversee volunteers to be well-informed on volunteer needs and role descriptions
  • Schedule, coordinate, and prepare all new volunteer Open House and Orientation meetings, including preparing all paperwork and handouts, scheduling volunteer presenters, and facilitating each meeting
  • Manage and support the team of New Volunteer Interviewers and New Volunteer Presenters as they enhance the capabilities of the People and Culture Team
  • Oversee the completion of 1-month and 3-month check-ins with new volunteers to assess success of onboarding and engagement
  • Manage the process of volunteers who are switching or taking on additional volunteer roles
  • Maintain and manage the accuracy of Volgistics, our volunteer database
  • Serve as the main point of contact for those seeking aggregated volunteer data
  • Create nametags for volunteers, students, interns and employees
  • Create keycards for volunteers and support the keycard process for students, interns and employees
  • Run background checks and motor vehicle reports for volunteers
  • Assist the People and Culture Team with planning and execution of People and Culture appreciation events
  • Lead the volunteer recruitment efforts and management of volunteers for special events, including Coastal Clean-Up Day
  • Any other volunteer management-related duties as assigned

 

 

KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to provide great customer service and follow through to a variety of audiences
  • Ability to engage large audiences and utilize strong presentation skills to share the message of The Marine Mammal Center
  • Strong prioritization skills and an efficient, proactive approach to the day-to-day work
  • Strong attention to detail and quick to learn; “Can-do” attitude and willing to take on new projects as needed
  • Ability to take initiative and see projects through to completion with minimal supervision
  • Skill and ability with using general Office Suite, relational databases (such as Volgistics), and ability to record, manage, and report data

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 1-2 years of experience in supporting and/or overseeing volunteers
  • Experience volunteering with large nonprofit organizations is highly desirable
  • Experience working or volunteering with wildlife rehabilitation, environmental organizations, or domestic animal rescues is highly desirable
  • Valid California driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • Must submit to and pass background and motor vehicle check
